Horse feed based exclusively on hay and oats is insufficient for balanced nutrition, since horses are frequently exposed to labours and stress.
Cereal doesn't have enough quality proteins with a balanced content of individual amino acids. Similarly, it does not contain enough important microelements (for instance, zinc, which is important for the correct growth of hooves) and antioxidants (vitamin E and selenium), which are important for the efficient functioning of horse's immune system.
Greater activity for sport and working horses demands larger quantities of vitamins from the B group, which play an important role in the metabolism of energy. Vitamin synthesis in the gastrointestinal tract cannot supply all the nutritional needs of these active horses. Unbalanced nutrition, feed change and a great intake of concentrates change intestinal flora and reduce the ability of vitamin synthesis by microorganisms.
Microorganisms are also influenced by stress (travelling, competition, diseases, etc.), consequently vitamin synthesis is limited during stress. At the same time, stress enhances the need for vitamins. In such situations a vitamin C supplement is important, since animals cannot produce it in sufficient quantities.
